Drinking water

If you are not connected to municipal water and your borehole or well doesn’t provide drinking water quality, no need to buy bottled water. Just take your suitable reusable containers to one of the fonts in the neighbourhood:

  • Uptown Monsanto, on your left just above the hairpin turn by the GNR and school
  • Cidral, on the road towards Salvador; 1 tap near recycling containers and another a few hundred metres further on on the left (I hear the latter has better water, but that may be urban legend)
  • Ramilo, off Penha Garcia road, left turn after the one signposted Ramilo, go to top of tarred road, the spring is inside a little brick shed. Dries up some summers.
  • Taps in Relva square have municipal (treated) water, so safe but sometimes tastes of chlorine.
  • Maria Martins, on main road at junction to lagar de Junho (quality varies)
  • Ask your neighbours, they’ll know the nearest and tastiest 🙂

Connecting to mains water

If you are near the mains water network, you can apply to be connected. Visit the camara in Idanha-a-Nova with ID, property documents (caderneta) and bank account details (for direct debit). Supply is metred and it gets expensive if you irrigate a lot of garden.
