EU Citizens

EU citizens have the right to reside for up to 3 months without any formalities, except possesion of a valid ID document.
Before the 3 months run out, you are obliged to register with the local authorities.
Step 1: Visit Junta de Fregusia with ID doc and proof of address (property documents, rental agreement or such). Ask for “Atestado de residencia” and pay 1 euro when you get it.
Step 2: Visit the Camara in Idanha-a-Nova with the above documents as well as proof of income or means to support yourself (and family where applicable), and you’ll obtain a residence document valid for 5 years.

After 5 years, you need to apply to SEF for the long-term residence card.

Third country nationals

Citizens of countries that are neither EU members nor affiliated with the EU, need a Schengen visa unless their country is exempt. See the long list of countries exempt from visa here https://imigrante.sef.pt/en/entrada-em-portugal/#1538043570153-e2e88a2a-13a0

If your contry is on the list, you can visit Portugal for up to 90 days in any 6 months period. For longer or more frequent stays, you are obliged to apply for a residence permit to SEF https://imigrante.sef.pt/en/    Check out “standard forms” or link to further info on each situation lower on the page.

Before visiting SEF to apply, book an appointment (see here:  SEF appointment booking  ) and be aware that your appointment may be several months after you book it.
