Chips & Vaccinations
Micro-chipping and registration in SIAC database (done by vet) is legally required for all dogs and cats living in Portugal, as well as those that normally live abroad and stay in Portugal for 120 days or more. The entry must be updated when ownership or address changes.
It is also obligatory to have a license from the Junta for each dog (and technically for cats). License fee is EUR 3,5o per year per companion dog. Take proof of rabies vaccine and SIAC registration to the junta to apply.
Rabies vaccination is mandatory for all dogs 3 months and older.
No mandatory vaccinations for cats.
Combination vaccination (5in1 for dogs, 4in1 for cats) are not mandatory but recommended.
Canine leishmaniasis and heartworm (transmitted by sand fly & mosquito resp.) are endemic in the country, so protection of dogs against the transmitting sandfly resp. mosquito is essential, through pour-on or collar and/or vaccination.
De-worming goes without saying.
Finding a pet
Chances are, some stray will find you, but if not, please consider adopting a rescue dog or cat. The following organisations are helping strays and are always looking for good homes for their ‘clients’:
Muda Idanha – are looking for both forever homes and temporary foster homes for dogs and cats.
